Thaiyamma's story

Thaiyamma, her husband and their young daughter were trapped in slavery for three years, forced to chop wood under the threat of abuse.

When Thaiyamma discovered she was pregnant again, she couldn’t bear the thought of another of her children experiencing this fate.

Thaiyamma found the courage to speak up and thanks to her bravery, IJM and local authorities brought several families to safety and arrested the trafficker.

Thaiyamma gave birth to her son Bablu in freedom just a few weeks later.

As she held her baby for the first time, Thaiyamma looked down at him in awe, and whispered, “I never knew I was going to see you. I never knew that I would meet you in freedom, and here you are."

Our legacy promise

Making decisions about leaving a legacy gift is deeply personal and we understand that your friends and family come first. We promise to respect your wishes throughout the process should you ever need to change your will in the future. Your privacy is also of utmost importance; you do not need to inform us of the decisions you make unless it is your wish to do so.

How do I leave a gift in my will?

There are three main types of gift you can leave:

Residuary - a percentage of the value of your estate after all other gifts or payments have been made. This allows you to provide for loved ones and leave a share of what is left to IJM. This gift will not devalue over time.
Pecuniary - a specific sum of money.
Specific - a specified item rather than money, such as a collectable item, piece of jewellery, or property.

What wording do I need to use to leave a gift for IJM UK?

Your solicitor or will-writer will need these key details:

For the different types of gift, please find the appropriate wording to use below.

For a residuary gift:

“I give __% share of the residue of my estate to…”

For a pecuniary gift:

“I give the sum of £__ to…”

For a specific gift:

“I give my [description of item] to…”

Then add this wording to leave a gift to IJM UK:

“International Justice Mission UK, PO Box 78942, London, SE11 9EB (registered charity 1099126) to be used for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other appropriate executive officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge of my executors’ duty.”

I have already written my will. Can I change it?

Yes! It’s important to regularly review your will to take into account any changes in your life or to inheritance tax rules. If you have already written your will and you want to leave a gift to IJM, one option is to make an official alteration called a codicil. A codicil allows you to make minor changes to your will without having to rewrite the entire original document.

However, as it is now easier to write wills, some legal professionals suggest a codicil is not as beneficial as it was previously and rewriting your will entirely may be preferable. This decision depends on personal preference. Your solicitor or an adviser can provide you with further information as you make this decision.

Do I need a solicitor to write my will?

No, but it is recommended that you use a solicitor or other qualified person.

Where can I find a solicitor?

As a charity we cannot legally recommend a solicitor or a law firm. However, Find a Solicitor is a free online service provided by the Law Society that can help direct you to a solicitor near you.

Is there a minimum amount I have to leave?

No. All gifts, whatever their size, have a powerful impact. Whatever gift you give will help protect people in poverty from slavery and violence.

How will inheritance tax affect my gift to IJM?

Inheritance tax is charged on the portion of your estate that exceeds a certain level at the time of your death. A gift to charity can reduce the overall amount of tax paid. If you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity, the inheritance tax rate is reduced from 40% to 36%. Check the gov.uk website for the most up-to-date information regarding inheritance tax, or speak to your solicitor or financial adviser to find out more.

Can I choose how my gift will be used?

We understand that our supporters may have a personal connection or interest to a particular part of the world or aspect of IJM’s work. While we will always try our best to honour specific requests, we do recommend leaving your gift to wherever the need is greatest.
