IJM Kenya secures freedom for Charles and Japheth after eight years of wrongful imprisonment.

Last year, on 10 June 2025, Charles and Japheth, two IJM Kenya clients, were sentenced to life imprisonment after spending years fighting charges for a crime they did not commit. The verdict devastated both men and their families and was a painful setback after years of efforts to prove their innocence.

This month, justice prevailed.

Charles and Japheth had been working as drivers on public service vehicles when they were arrested and accused of robbing a motorist of a mobile phone. Although police searched shortly after the alleged incident, no stolen items were recovered from either man or from the vehicle.

Despite the wrongful and devastating conviction, IJM lawyers remained determined to pursue justice and filed an appeal. After reviewing the evidence, the High Court identified inconsistencies in witness accounts, especially concerning the timeline of events. The court ruled that Charles and Japheth's right to a fair trial had been compromised and overturned both the conviction and sentence.

Charles and Japheth were acquitted and released, bringing an end to an eight-year fight for justice.

“After eight long years of Charles and Japheth seeking justice, I thank the Lord that their dark days are over. Although we cannot give them back lost time and opportunities, the judgment allows them to rebuild their lives without fear and with hope for a better future and safer communities. And we are here for it!” - Esther, IJM Kenya Survivor Services Manager

Today, Charles and Japheth are beginning the process of rebuilding their lives. They are receiving counselling support as they reconnect with their families and communities.
