IJM’s statement on the death of Albert Ojwang

June 2025

We are deeply saddened and outraged by the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, Kenya.

According to statements from both the police and his family, Albert was arrested in Migori and transported to Nairobi in connection with an alleged fake publication.

We welcome the swift action taken by the Inspector General of Police, who has interdicted the Officer Commanding Station and all officers who were on duty at the time of Albert’s death. This is a critical step toward ensuring a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation.

We also acknowledge the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for launching an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Albert’s death.

We remain committed to supporting our partners, including IPOA and civil society organisations, in uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice is served. Albert’s life mattered. His family and the public deserve answers, accountability, and justice.

We call on all relevant authorities to act with urgency, transparency, and integrity in this matter. We will continue to monitor developments closely and stand in solidarity with Albert’s family and all those seeking justice and accountability for police abuse of power cases.

Survivors and Justice Centres unite to demand end to Police Brutality in Kenya

COVID-19 curfews have led to a surge in cases of police violence in Kenya. IJM and partners have recorded 23 possible deaths as a result of police brutality during the curfew period alone. IJM Kenya and others in the Police Reforms Working Group have released statements against this abuse and started monitoring cases. Activists and survivor networks across Kenya are advocating for an end to impunity for police violence.
