Last week in Kenya, a police officer and a civilian were convicted of manslaughter for the brutal killing of Paul Mureithi – bringing long-awaited accountability and justice for his family.

After a disagreement, the two men invited Paul for drinks, then violently attacked him and left him for dead. Paul made a dying declaration naming both attackers to witnesses and responding officers.

IJM Kenya supported Paul’s family throughout the legal process, serving as victim counsel and ensuring their voices were heard in court.

Local media, including The Star and The Citizen reported on the conviction, spreading the message that justice is possible – even when those in power commit violence.

The convicted officer also faces charges in a separate sexual abuse case, highlighting the urgent need to address police misconduct. While most police officers in Kenya take their pledge to protect seriously, too often people are harmed by those sworn to serve.

In Kenya, less than 2% of police-related extrajudicial killings arrive in court (Missing Voices, 2024). This conviction signals continued progress as IJM works with local authorities and partners to strengthen justice systems, protect communities, and hold those who abuse their power accountable.
