After years of suffering in silence, Orikiriza has finally received justice.

A high-ranking government official in Uganda has been convicted of intimate partner violence, following repeated physical abuse and financial control. The verdict marks a significant moment in the stand against violence towards women in Uganda.

Orikiriza met her partner in 1999, and they were blessed with two children. But behind closed doors, Orikiriza endured a highly turbulent marriage. Her husband physically assaulted her repeatedly and took control of her business, stripping her of financial independence.

Despite Orikiriza’s courage to report the abuse to police, no action was taken. Her husband’s wealth and status shielded him from accountability.

Feeling frustrated and intimidated, Orikiriza reported the matter to the Police Professional Standards Unit (PSU), and the case was escalated to the Resident State Attorney. Orikiriza also reached out to IJM for support. Our team walked with her every step of the way – offering legal advice, counselling, representation, and direct risk management.

Finally, last month, the perpetrator was charged with assault and found guilty at Mwanga II Court.

Orikiriza shared, “I have been sleeping well since he was convicted.”

We celebrate with Orikiriza and continue to stand with her as she rebuilds her life. But tragically, Orikiriza’s experiences are far from rare.

1 in 3 women globally experiences violence in her lifetime.

This must change.
