Justice in Intimate Partner Violence Case
February 2026

A leader from the Uganda Survivor Network referred a case of intimate partner violence to IJM, helping secure justice for Lydia. Her decisive action led to the perpetrator's arrest and sentence, under charges of domestic violence and assault.

For years, Lydia endured violence in her marriage. She filed several complaints with the police, but despite warnings from officers, her husband continued to exhibit aggressive and controlling behaviour.

At one point, he set Lydia’s house on fire. Although police arrested him, he was released shortly afterwards, and the case did not progress.

Less than two years later, Lydia reported another violent incident after he attacked her and her three-year-old daughter. Medical examinations were not returned to the police, and the case stalled.

Two months later, the perpetrator confronted Lydia at the local shopping centre and beat her severely, accusing her of not washing his clothes. Lydia sustained injuries to her ear. That night, he returned and threatened to kill her.

The next morning, Lydia reported the assault to the police, and a leader within the local chapter of the Uganda Survivor Network, who knew of Lydia’s situation, referred the case to IJM for support.

IJM worked alongside police to move the case forward, supporting the investigation and arrest of the perpetrator. Her husband was charged with domestic violence and assault. IJM also provided Lydia with psychosocial support throughout the legal process.

This case highlights the critical role of survivor leaders in championing change within their communities. Equipped with knowledge of the referral pathways, they are empowered to guide women like Lydia toward safety and justice.
