ACCRA, GHANA – September 20th, 2022
Justice for 14 year old survivor of child trafficking as trafficker is sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Slavery on Lake Volta

Khris* is the eldest of five siblings. In 2016, a trafficker approached Khris's parents about employing their son in fishing activities on Lake Volta. He promised to pay the family annually.

But after he was trafficked, Khris lived and worked on the lake with no access to education. Most days, he worked on the lake from midnight to noon, paddling the canoe and setting baskets and bamboo traps in the lake.

Freedom

After five years trapped in slavery, the police and IJM brought Khris to safety and arrested the trafficker. Khris was placed in a private shelter where he received care and support.

After a thorough home assessment, Khris was joyfully reunited with a close relative.

This final judgement brings relief to Khris* who is now enrolled in school for the first time.
