Two boys safe from trafficking in Ghana
Summary:
The case began back in 2024, when the Ghana Police Service reached out to IJM regarding a suspected trafficking case involving children. A concerned community member had raised the alert.
The children were being forced to work in the fishing industry. They were coached to hide from strangers and avoid interactions with outsiders.
Despite initial challenges that stalled progress, IJM provided crucial mentorship, guiding officers to process the case correctly. The District Commander, who had previously been trained by IJM, swiftly assigned an investigative team.
The police have now completed their investigations and forwarded the case to the Attorney General’s Department, where prosecution is expected to commence soon. IJM will provide legal advice as needed as the case proceeds.
We recently celebrated a major milestone in Ghana’s fight against human trafficking. The nation was recognised for meeting the highest standards in combating this crime, reflecting the hard work of government leaders, law enforcement, community partners and advocates who helped increase prosecutions of traffickers and connect more than 2,300 survivors – like these two boys - with protective services.
