Inspired by IJM Ghana’s Boat Patrol Project, the Ghana Police has commissioned four new patrol boats to strengthen its Marine Police Unit – a major step forward in protecting children from trafficking on Lake Volta.

The prevalence, danger, and severity of child trafficking and exploitative child labour in Lake Volta’s fishing industry is well established. Trafficked children are forced to work long hours on the lake, often at night, diving into the water to untangle fishing nets. They are controlled through physical abuse, threats, fear, and the withholding of food.

This government investment in new boats will significantly improve security along Ghana’s vast shoreline and increase the police’s ability to stop traffickers and safeguard children.

At the commissioning ceremony, the Inspector General of Police and the Minister for Interior publicly recognised IJM’s contribution to the Marine Police Unit. They highlighted how IJM provided the first speedboats that enabled operations against child trafficking on Lake Volta, as well as other logistical support, including vehicles.

Christian Tetteh Yohonu, the Inspector General of Police, shared, “This support is a testament to IJM’s commitment to promoting maritime security and protecting the lives of our citizens. We are grateful for their partnership and look forward to continued collaboration.”

This investment signals hope – a future where children are protected. It shows what’s possible when IJM, governments, and partners work together to dismantle systems of exploitation, until all are free.

This Christmas, you can help trafficked children experience the precious little things in life made possible by freedom.
