A baby has been born in freedom after their mother and 21 others were brought to safety from violence on a sugarcane farm.

After a government-led operation in South Asia – supported by IJM – 22 people were freed from forced labour trafficking on a sugarcane farm. One woman, forced to work through her pregnancy to full-term, gave birth in freedom the very next day.

The families had been trapped by false debts and threats. They were beaten, denied proper food, and forbidden from leaving.

They didn’t even allow us to feed our children,” one survivor shared. “We were threatened and lived in fear of death.”

Thanks to the swift action of IJM’s local partner and government officials, the families received release certificates and proof of their cancelled debts. Legal action is now underway against the trafficker.

Today, these people and their families are free to enjoy the little things that make life beautiful.

We want every child to be born into freedom – and we know you do to.

Your gift today can help bring more families to safety and prevent exploitation in the first place.
