60-year-old man reunited with his family after 20 years of exploitation

March 2025

A recent inspection led by local officials in South Asia resulted in the freedom of 60-year-old Appa Rao, who had been forced to work as a shepherd for 20 years.

After two decades of exploitation and separation from his family, authorities reunited him with his family.

Witnessing this incredibly emotional moment, a local official shared, “It was an overwhelming feeling to see the man reunited with his family.

Appa Rao had been forced to walk long distances to graze sheep in the isolated countryside. He never received any wages for his work.

When officials found Appa Rao, he shared that he had lost all contact with his family. He struggled to communicate due to the years of isolation he’d experienced.

Authorities arrested the farm owner, took him into custody, and registered a formal complaint against him.

Appa Rao’s family separation captured the hearts of the local media and government. In the weeks that followed, print and digital journalists raised awareness of his case alongside officials.

IJM connected with a local NGO, who took Appa Rao’s photo to local communities in an attempt to find someone who might recognise him.

Finally, after a dedicated search leaving no stone unturned, on March 14th 2025, the family was reunited.

Appa Rao shared, I am happy because I am back home. I am joyful to be reunited with my daughter and son-in-law”.

IJM’s team will continue to support the local authorities as they pursue legal action against the owner and work with partners to help Appa Rao recover well in freedom.
