Teenager now free from trafficking in South Asia

July 2024

Last month, government officials in South Asia brought a 19-year-old boy, who had been forced to work on a farm his entire childhood, to safety.

He was only seven years old when he was forced to work on a goat farm to repay his family's mounting debt. For the next 12 years, he was exploited, isolated, and unable to return home.

"He has lost his entire childhood to the exploitative nature of [this] crime”, shared the State Programme Director in charge.

The teenager will now be taking baby steps in his newfound life in freedom.”

The government’s efforts to support this young man didn’t stop once he was out of harm’s way. Local authorities, with the support of IJM and other NGOs, are also providing him with crucial aftercare, helping him to re-build his life in freedom.
