Meet with your MP

Have you already emailed your MP asking for Tech that Protects children? Are you ready to take the next step in helping stop abuse before it starts?  

Here’s our guide to organising a meeting with your MP... 

Livestreamed sexual abuse is now the main form of commercial sexual exploitation of children. Horrifyingly, the UK is among the top three global consumers of for-profit livestreamed abuse.

IJM is calling the UK Government to legislate to require all devices sold in the UK, for both adults and children, to include on-device safeguards that block livestreamed child sexual abuse.  

MPs are more likely to pursue legislative change after a face-to-face interaction with their constituents – they are elected to represent your views, after all! While emails asking for action are great at putting an issue on your MP’s agenda, your MP being able to hear your passion and further understand the issue of online sexual exploitation of children will invaluably help them prioritise action.

How do I arrange a meeting with my MP?  

All you have to do is ask! In an email to your MP (find your MP’s contact information), ask if they can meet you in person to discuss the issue and preventative measures in more detail. This meeting would take place in your local area with your MP providing a date, time and place. Alternatively, some MPs host regular drop-in meetings (see if your MP does).

What should I say?  

You don’t need to be an expert to be able to communicate the importance of the issue to your MP. Tell them why protecting children matters to you. Do you work with children? Have a family? Want to see children protected from abuse? 

Here are a few statistics that illustrate the scale of the problem accurately:  

• The UK is among the top three global consumers of for-profit livestreamed child sexual abuse (UK National Crime Agency).
• In 2025, 73% of analysed child sexual abuse material was not self-generated, suggesting much of the abuse was captured on adult devices and underscoring the need to implement safeguards on those devices (Internet Watch Foundation).  
• A study by Childlight and IJM in 2024 revealed that 1 in 15 UK respondents either have watched livestreamed child sexual abuse or would if given the opportunity.  

Tell your MP to act by asking the government to legislate to require technology companies to include on-device protection to block livestreamed child abuse. This could be by writing to the Home Secretary and/or Secretary of State for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport or by asking an oral question in Parliament.  

You may not get a meeting – MPs are busy and often have other issues that they are pursuing. Don’t let this dishearten you – politics is a sphere we have the ability to participate in, and every voice raised matters. You are part of a global movement helping bring an end to child sexual abuse.
