In collaboration with survivors of sexual violence, IJM and the Guatemalan government have launched a new trauma-informed care course.

The course is designed for all professionals who interact with women and children who have experienced violence, particularly officials in the Guatemalan Justice System.

Tati Navas (pictured), leader of survivor group ‘My Story Matters’ says, “Based on my experience, I recognize the importance of the justice system, victim-support institutions, and the community working collaboratively to ensure that justice is served effectively and without re-traumatization."

Guatemala urgently needs change: around 128 cases of gender-based violence are reported every day (Proyecto Mujeres Activas). Many women do not report the crimes due to fear or shame, and those that do can encounter serious legal difficulties.

Untrained officials can misinterpret signs of trauma as untruthfulness, which can delay the legal process and discourage survivors from pursuing justice. Common signs of trauma include memory lapses, emotional withdrawal, inconsistent reporting of events or delays in reporting due to fear.

Tati knows this reality firsthand- when she bravely reported her abuse, she “was questioned for not reporting the violence sooner."

Thankfully, the new course will address this issue, equipping officials with the tools to recognise trauma symptoms, avoid re-traumatising survivors during interviews and investigations, and support survivors to engage with the legal process.

It marks an exciting step towards ending violence against women and children in Guatemala. We’re expectant that more women will report cases of sexual violence, as they have confidence that they will be listened to and understood with care.
