Young people, who were once trapped in slavery, are now taking a lead in the movement to protect children from trafficking and abuse.

“For so long, we suffered in silence, but we survived,” said Dortumor, the coordinator of a new group called ‘Hope in Freedom’.

This new advocacy group is determined to protect children at serious risk of trafficking into the fishing industry on Lake Volta.

“When we were rescued, our hopes to freely live and pursue our goals were restored. We have a heavy weight to ensure no child goes through what we have.”

The IJM team are standing alongside them, supporting them as they choose to speak out, providing trauma-informed care and storytelling workshops.

"Hope in Freedom’ is rising as leaders in this community, but they are not standing alone.

They are joining with survivor leaders across other parts of Ghana who are advocating against child trafficking in their communities, sharing their stories, and making sure this does not happen to any other child.” - Josephine Aparo, Senior Lead for the Global Survivor Network

Survivor-led change is powerful.

Thanks to the support of people like you, survivors can recover from the abuse they experienced, and choose to speak out for change. Thank you.
