18 people brought to safety from forced labour
Summary:
February 2026
Local authorities in South Asia brought three families – including 10 children – to safety from an isolated farm.
The case initially focused on bringing one man, Raju, to freedom. He had reportedly been trapped on the farm for more than 20 years.
Raju began working at the farm when he was just eight years old. At the time, he didn’t know that his father’s employer was keeping their family trapped through a false debt. When his father died, the false debt was transferred to Raju – and eventually extended to his wife and two children.
Every day, the labourers were forced to work more than 17 hours, farming the owner’s land and making bricks. They believed their hard work would help reduce their supposed debts, but each year Raju watched his balance rise without explanation.
The farm owner also controlled the workers with threats and violence. Anyone who attempted to escape was beaten.
Everything changed when a social worker from one of IJM’s local partners identified Raju’s situation while surveying the district for signs of exploitation. Officials launched a further investigation with IJM’s support. In addition to Raju’s family, they found two other families – including many young children – trapped in similar conditions.
Acting quickly, officials brought all 18 people to safety, providing them with blankets, warm meals, and medical check-ups.
Within 24 hours, authorities issued release certificates to formally cancel the false debts. Police also filed a legal case against the farm owner.
Commenting on the case, the Sub Divisional Magistrate shared, “This will send a strong message, and other [farm] owners will think twice before engaging in such practices. I will not tolerate this kind of crime in my district."
The survivors will continue to receive trauma-informed care and support to help them heal and adjust to life in freedom.
This case shows what’s possible when authorities and local partners take bold action – and reinforces the growing momentum to protect families from forced labour.
