Cocoa beans used to make chocolate are harvested by farmers who often live on less than $1 a day according to the International Cocoa Initiative. Splitting open cocoa pods with machetes is dangerous work without protective clothing. This work can be done by men, women and children who have been denied their freedom and livelihood.
