Scovia was 16 when an older man took advantage of her, abandoning her when she fell pregnant. After the baby became unwell, Scovia asked for his help – but he violently attacked her and abducted her child.

Scovia fought to get her baby back, despite pressure from the police and the perpetrator to drop the case. Thanks to the support of people like you, IJM helped Scovia get primary custody of her baby and the perpetrator was ordered to pay the child's welfare costs.

How does IJM work?

IJM's team of lawyers, social workers and advocates work together with authorities, survivor leaders and partners to: bring victims of violence to safety; provide trauma informed support to survivors; ensure perpetrators are held to account so that they can't harm others; and strengthen justice systems to build safe futures that last.

Over the past two decades, IJM and local police have brought over 76,000 people to safety from slavery and violence.

Thousands of traffickers and abusers have been held to account.

By working to stop the problem at source, we have seen slavery decrease by up to 86% in places where we work.
