Ruth Dawson: Legal Fellow, IJM Washington, DC, Autumn 2007
After graduating from the University of St Andrews, Ruth stepped into law through a law conversion course at Nottingham. Six weeks of legal aid and legal education work in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya inspired Ruth to apply for a legal fellowship at IJM headquarters before moving to London to begin her training contract.
“If you had told me six months ago that there are currently 27 million slaves in the world – more than at any other time in history – I would have been shocked, and then I would have done nothing. My internship with IJM changed that. I met former slaves, attended congressional hearings and was given real responsibilities and real work in the office. IJM taught me the importance of pro-activity, excellence in the workplace, integrity, prayer and professionalism. My experiences with IJM were not limited to a three month internship; they have given me a solid foundation for the rest of my legal career.”
