I spent four years as a young child in Malawi before moving to Edinburgh in Scotland with my family. The impact of those first few years has stayed with me. I became aware from a young age of the global injustices which divide our world, combined with a great love and heart for the continent of Africa. After school I spent a month in Kenya and then four months of my ‘gap’ year in Malawi. In Malawi I worked in a small village outside my childhood home of Zomba teaching in a village pre-school, along with small group work with a number of Aids orphans from the village.
I am currently about to begin my final year of an International Relations degree at the University of St Andrews. I have relished the time here to study and it has encouraged me, as I have continued to consider the part God has prepared for me to play in seeking to share the message of God’s gracious justice in the world beyond my time here at St Andrews. While at university I enjoy Irish dancing, running on the beautiful beach, singing, spending time with local young people, serving on the committee in the active Christian Union, attending the local Baptist church - and studying!
I will be serving as an intern in the UK for the summer and will be based in Edinburgh. Echoing the challenge in Micah and IJM’s core commitment to ‘Seek justice, learn to do kindness and walking humbly with your God,’ I hope to learn more of the practical ways to take part in God’s restoration plan. I am excited about the chance to raise awareness of the work IJM UK does in Scotland and to encourage people to rise up and respond to the call to seek justice for the oppressed through prayerful action and support today.
